We opened our shop knowing that Portland had plenty of places to buy weed, but NO places that also had:

• A grow attached with viewing windows (The Grow Portal) where you could look in and see our plants in flower and our grow team hard at work doing what they do best
• Cannabis Classes, like our Home Grow Series that covers all of the essentials you need to know to grow a passion crop at home. Or our Cooking With Cannabis class that teaches you how to go from flower to finished product, including all of the official dosing formulas and a banger of a chocolate chip cookies recipe. Or our How To Roll A Joint class, where we get hands on together and practice making mistakes and correcting them with pointers from our joint rolling pros.  
• The Employee Art Gallery – where because we happen to have so many talented artists on our own team, we get to display and sell their work and support our people beyond their employment with us. 100% of the proceeds go to the artist. We just enjoy borrowing it while it’s in the shop. 🙂 
• The Organic Clone Nursery – where we sell smaller clones, medium-sized teens, and ready-to-flower plants at the best prices in the state. 
• The Wheel of Wonder (ok this is a terrible name, someone please think of something cooler) – where when you spend $100 you get to spin and win something sweet like free weed up to a full ounce.
• Community Events with food, raffles, contests, crafting, and more – like our Spliffmas Village Holiday party, and our Halloween Pet Costume Contest
• A SERIOUSLY cool space. If you haven’t been inside our shop it’s sort of a piece of art in and of itself. It’s decorated with live cannabis plants, Amber put her soul into the decor and color palette, we have teal velvet curtains hung across a huge orange display cabinet protecting the flower that looks like a puppet show is about to happen – it’s cool.

And then there’s customer experience. We wanted to bring things back to the days before cannabis dispensaries started hiring basic retail workers instead of passionate cannabis aficionados. If you want to get in and out of our store fast with minimum interaction, we get it – you can still do that. But if you want to ask questions and get advice and recommendations from educated people who truly know their stuff when it comes to cannabis and can really talk shop with you, that’s our team.

A: We offer a ton at both ends of the spectrum, – we just don’t focus much on the “mids.” We vowed never to be one of those shops that overcharges for weed that’s just meh, or that carries gross, bottom-of-the-barrel hay as our budget offerings. Life’s too short to smoke crappy weed no matter how much you’re spending y’all!  

Our goal: Provide access to the best weed possible for your dollar.

In our experience, our customers seem to be either:
A) Looking for that specialty smoke and wanting to keep trying what’s new from Oregon’s best craft cultivators,
B) Looking for the best bang-for-the-buck herb they can get to smoke great weed on a budget on the daily,
C) Utilizing cannabis for a medical situation where cannabinoid and terpene profiles matter beyond recreational appreciation,
or D) Treating themselves because they don’t smoke all the time and heck, if you’re going to do it, let’s do this right!

So we focus on having the best weed for the price range. 

And as far as edibles, dabs, vapes and other non-flower products go, we take the same philosophy: if you’re not looking for the best, (and frankly even if you are), you’re looking for the best you can get for your dollar, right? We carry the top end of the quality spectrum and also the budget end of the price spectrum. 

A: Our 35 and 50 dollar ounces are ALWAYS fresh. We wanted to be known for this. Here’s our strategy:
We basically took the flower that would normally be on higher shelves and are selling that as our $35 and $50 ounces instead of selling it at the middle. Since it’s better weed than you can get for that price range at other shops, it flies off the shelves, and we constantly rotate and restock the inventory. Hence, always fresh.

A: An indoor, no-till living soil environment allows cannabis to thrive naturally the way it was intended to, within a controlled dynamic that protects it from outdoor elements that may over stress the plant.

Instead of being in synthetic, inert, or artificial mediums like rockwool, coco, or even in water, plants are grown in large, shared beds of extremely high quality soil. This is NOT the same soil as in your vegetable garden outside. We amend our soil with biochar, the most nutrient-dense naturally occurring amendment available in nature. Our biochar is created by our owners during camp-fire approved seasons in Oregon National Forests.

The thousands of worms we have in every bed not only aerate the soil, but they feed on decaying roots and other microorganisms in the soil, naturally fertilizing it with their waste. 

Growing plants with vibrant and intense cannabinoid and terpene profiles is a craft of balancing the right amount of intentional stress. Too much stress, and plants have to put energy into healing and repair instead of developing resin and VOCs (terps and cannabinoids). Not enough stress, and plants don’t really get motivated to put out as much resin and VOCs. The majority of living soil growers agree that living soil allows for the best optimization of natural and human-initiated plant stress.

When its environment is ideal, cannabis can take in exactly what it needs instead of a human having to guess or overriding the ever-changing real time needs of the plant. We feed the soil, and the soil feeds the plant. 

We craft our own organic teas that feed our plants – think like feeding a vegetable garden with organic compost.

In a living soil environment, a plant develops a strong immune system from the micro-diversity of the soil and builds natural resistance to pests and disease – things that in other more synthetic-based grows would require sprays and pesticides to mediate. Plants in synthetic mediums encounter limited species of good bacteria and are more susceptible to disease and pest invasion. You can compare it to the microbiome in humans – the more diverse the flora, the better we’re able to maintain a healthy gut and immune function.

A: Yes! Portal 503 carries an extensive line of organic, healthy, fresh clones right from our nursery that anyone in Oregon can purchase. 

Our Clones page has a list of clones that generally circulate through production, but it’s best to view our live menu on Dutchie, or simply call the store if you’d like to know if something specific is in stock. 

The state of Oregon limits recreational purchasers to 4 clones at one time per day. 

If you hold a commercial or medical state growing license, the limit on how many clones you can buy or possess depends on your specific tier, canopy size, or patient allotment defined by your license.

A: We pride ourselves on growing strains that not everyone else has their hands on, as well as pure OG strains that are now rare due to how many times they’ve been crossed. Brian has been a seed collector for years, and has connections with legacy breeders from all over the world.

We’ve got rare strains like Berry Bonds, Pink Zotz, Mendo Breath, the OG White Window, Grandaddy Purps, the OG Sour Deisel, Glookies, and several strains that originated in Hawaii – mostly noteably Hawaii 503.

We’re proud to have the original Blue Dream, that comes from Mendocino County California that has the terp and flavor profile you remember from the late 90’s and early 2000’s.

We also grow Flo’s Gift, a CBD dominant strain known for intense medical benefits, that few are willing to grow because it’s such a hassle and yields less than other strains when you compare plant-to-plant weights. But people track us down for it and we can barely keep it on the shelves because it helps so many people, so we’re committing to keep running it. Our Flo’s Gift took 1st place in the 2026 Oregon Leaf Bowl for best CBD dominant strain! 

We have a constant phenohunt happening on site – which means that we’re constantly popping new needs and crossing new genetics and even helping breeders test new genetics to keep our library and grow line-up fresh.

A: The Portal 503 Employee Art Gallery is a space dedicated to displaying works from all of the very talented artists on our team.

Who knew when we hired our people that so many of them were also amazing artists on the side?! We set out to create a local artists gallery, and it doesn’t get more local than this!

100% of the proceeds go to the artists. We just enjoy borrowing the pieces while they’re in the shop. 🙂

A: We accept Cash and Debit cards, and we have an on-site ATM available for customer convenience.

We also sell Portal Gift Cards and accept those as payment.

A: We are located at 729 SE Powell Blvd, Portland, OR 97202, serving the local communities of Brooklyn, Ladd’s Addition, Hosford-Abernethy, Sellwood, and Central Eastside. But we also have people from all over the state and out of state come for our rare cannabis classes and to check out our show-grow.
